Music Video Genres

The music video genre I will be discussing is rock. I have selected the following 5 videos which represent this genre:
Paramore - Still into you
Fall Out Boy - Thanks for the memories

The Killers - Somebody told me

Panic at the Disco - But its better if you do

The All American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret

One convention that rock music videos have in common is the use of similar shot types. The music video will have a shot of the full band with wide shots, however, also close ups of the lead singer as well as close ups of other band members playing their instruments. This is shown is these two videos.

Another similarity between rock music videos is that usually the band are dressed in similar outfits, which have the same colour theme and are the same style. In these two selected videos both bands are wearing the same outfits including the lead singers. In these two particular videos both bands are dressed very formal this is to match with the locations of both videos.

Another convention used commonly in rock music videos is the locations used. Commonly the band will be performing on some sort of platform with a different background being played behind them. Also each video will be shot in a small looking enclosed space, so that there can be various different shots of each band member.

Jump cutting is another convention used in a majority of rock videos. This is where the band will be in one location, then the music video will cut and they will appear in another location, regardless of continuity. The purpose of this convention is took make the video a faster pace and seem more lively.

Another convention used in rock music videos is diegetic sound. This is the sound that the artist can hear as well as the audience, for example this could be a car driving past. This makes the video seem more realistic.
